Lei Day 2020

Friday is May Day, but in Hawaii it is also Lei Day. Typically this is a day of celebration, hula, lei making demonstrations and contests, and the crowning from the Lei Full and her court. If you google "Lei Day" you can find all kinds of videos that are colorful, tropical, and full of celebration and good cheer.

Since we are social distancing watching the videos is likely as close as you will get, even if you are in Hawaii. Given that carnations are generally more available than tropical flowers, and more affordable, perhaps you will want to find carnations (or get them delivered) and make your own Lei, watch videos, and maybe one of the old Elvis movies filmed on the Islands.

May your tropical, socially distanced, and yet joyful celebration be grand fun. POG (Passion, Orange, Guava juice) is available in a lot of stores in the frozen juice section, making your celebration even more tropical. If you do decide to make a Lei please share on my Facebook page, I would love to see how it turned out!

Here is a short video on how to make a carnation Lei - enjoy!
